Tiếp tục series phân tích những điểm các bạn hay hiểu sai trong GMAT. Misconception hôm nay là: that, which phải đứng ngay sau danh từ mà nó modify. Nếu như bạn tự học qua các giải thích trên mạng thì khả năng cao là bạn đã từng đọc qua các lý do để loại đáp án kiểu như: that, which không đứng sau danh từ mà nó modify loại ngay không cần nghĩ nhiều. Điều đó đúng trong khá nhiều trường hợp, tuy nhiên luôn có ngoại lệ, và GMAT luôn biết cách làm bất ngờ tất cả mọi người.
Ví dụ 1:
After more than four decades of research and development, a new type of jet engine is being tested that could eventually propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help boost cargoes into space at significantly lower costs than current methods permit.
A. tested that could eventually propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help
B. tested that could eventually have the capability of propelling aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or to help
C. tested, eventually able to propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours, or helping
D. tested, and it eventually could propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or helping

Theo bạn trong câu này từ that đang modify cho danh từ nào? Nếu bạn search câu này trên GMAT Club thì sẽ thấy rất nhiều thắc mắc điều tương tự. Danh từ duy nhất mà that có thể modify ở đây là a new type of jet engine, tuy nhiên that lại đứng quá xa danh từ mà nó modify và do đó loại mất A và B.
Tuy nhiên đáp án chính xác của câu này là A (có thể loại các câu khác bằng lỗi parallel). Và trong trường hợp này từ that nhảy cóc qua cả cụm “is being tested” để modify cho a new type of jet engine. Đây là một trường hợp ngoại lệ, modifier có thể đứng cách xa danh từ mà nó modify: “A very short predicate falls between, shifting a very long modifier back”. Nghĩa là SVO + modifier, nếu VO (verb + object) rất ngắn và modifier rất dài thì có thể đẩy VO lên trước và modifier vẫn có thể modify cho subject. Dạng này không xuất hiện nhiều nhưng các bạn nên biết để tránh mất điểm đáng tiếc.
Ví dụ 2 (câu này mới xuất hiện trong OG 18):
Gusty westerly winds will continue to usher in a seasonably cool air mass into the region, as a broad area of high pressure will build and bring fair and dry weather for several days.
A. to usher in a seasonably cool air mass into the region, as a broad area of high pressure will build and
B. ushering in a seasonably cool air mass into the region and a broad area of high pressure will build that
C. to usher in a seasonably cool air mass to the region, a broad area of high pressure building, and
D. ushering a seasonably cool air mass in the region, with a broad area of high pressure building and

Đáp án chính xác của câu này là E. Mặc dù từ which đứng sau động từ builds nhưng nó vẫn có thể modify cho danh từ a broad area of high pressure như đã phân tích ở trên. Hi vọng sau bài này các bạn sẽ không vội vã loại một đáp án khi mà modifier đứng hơi xa khỏi danh từ mà nó modify (ngoài trường hợp short predicate ra thì vẫn còn một vài trường hợp ngoại lệ khác nữa).
