Hôm nay mình sẽ bàn về một vấn đề ngữ pháp thú vị subordinate conjunction và cùng làm rõ một điểm mà nhiều bạn hay hiểu nhầm: sau although liệu có cần một clause?
Đầu tiên although là một subordinate conjunction, được dùng để nối các mệnh đề phụ thuộc (dependent clauses) với mệnh đề độc lập (independent clause). Nhiệm vụ của mệnh đề phụ thuộc là bổ sung ý nghĩa cho mệnh đề độc lập, giúp cho mệnh đề độc lập trở lên dễ hiểu hơn.
Trong hầu hết mọi trường hợp thì although sẽ được theo sau bởi một subordinate clause. Ví dụ: “Although people with scarcity mentality might verbally express happiness for others’ success, inwardly they are eating their hearts out.”
Tuy nhiên đấy không phải là tất cả, trong GMAT bạn sẽ gặp rất nhiều trường hợp mà theo sau although, và các subordinate conjunction khác, không phải là một mệnh đề.
Ví dụ 1 – đây là một câu trong OG 15.
It is called a sea, but the landlocked Caspian is actually the largest lake on Earth, which covers more than four times the surface area of its closest rival in size, North America’s Lake Superior.
A. It is called a sea, but the landlocked Caspian is actually the largest lake on Earth, which covers
B. Although it is called a sea, actually the landlocked Caspian is the largest lake on Earth, which covers

Trong trường hợp này, theo sau though là một noun modifier (verb-ed modifier hay còn gọi là past participle) chứ không phải là một clause. Called là modifier và nó modify cho danh từ “the landlocked Caspian”.
Và đây là một note mà các bạn cần phải nhớ: khi mà theo sau một subordinate conjunction (although, though, if, when, since …) là một noun modifier, noun modifier đó sẽ luôn luôn modify cho subject của mệnh đề phía sau. Và cách đơn giản nhất để hiểu được ý nghĩa câu (nếu bạn thấy cách viết đó khó hiểu) là chèn thêm chủ ngữ và động từ để modifier đó trở thành một câu hoàn chỉnh:
“Though it (the landlocked Caspian) is called a sea, the landlocked Caspian is actually the largest lake on Earth, covering more than four times the surface area of its closest rival in size, North America’s Lake Superior.”
Ví dụ 2: OG 15
Along with the drop in producer prices announced yesterday, the strong retail sales figures released today seem to indicate that the economy, although growing slowly, is not nearing a recession.
Phần mệnh đề theo sau that là: “The economy, although growing slowly, is not nearing a recession.”
Trong câu này, theo sau although là verb-ing modifier growing, và growing đang modify cho subject là “The economy”. Nếu viết hoàn chỉnh câu này sẽ là: Although it is growing slowly, the economy is not nearing a recession.
Ví dụ 3: Verbal Review 2016.
Though being tiny, blind, and translucent, a recently discovered species of catfish lessens their vulnerability with thickened bones and armor plates on their sides.
A. Though being tiny, blind, and translucent, a recently discovered species of catfish lessens their vulnerability with thickened bones and armor plates on their sides.
B. Though tiny, blind, and translucent, a recently discovered species of catfish has thickened bones and armor plates on its sides that lessen its vulnerability.

Đáp án chính xác là B. Theo sau though là noun modifier: “tiny, blind and translucent” (để ý, tính từ cũng được liệt vào noun modifier nhé).
Full sentence: Though it is tiny, blind, and translucent, a recently discovered species of catfish has thickened bones and armor plates on its sides that lessen its vulnerability.
Ví dụ 4: – If – OG 16
Rising inventories, if not accompanied by corresponding increases in sales, can lead to production cutbacks that would hamper economic growth.
Theo sau if không phải là một clause mà là noun modifier modify cho Rising inventories. Full sentence của câu này sẽ là:
“If they are not accompanied by corresponding increases in sales, rising inventories can lead to production cutbacks that would hamper economic growth.”
Ví dụ 5: Verbal Review 2016
Certain pesticides can become ineffective if used repeatedly in the same place.
Full sentence: Certain pesticides can become ineffective if they are used repeatedly in the same place.

Many politicians, business leaders, and scholars discount the role of public policy and emphasize the role of the labor market when explaining employers’ maternity-leave policies.
Theo sau when là “explaining” đang modify cho subject đó là many politicians.
